Much has happened since my last post.......

Since the Pens won the 'CUP'

During the week of 6/14/2009, I visited several colleges and universities in New England. I left for Connecticut on Sunday, June 14, 2009, and everything was going well. As I was exiting I-95 in CT, exit 24 to be exact, the brakes on my Jeep failed while heading down hill on the exit. God must have been watching over me because there were no cars in front of me and the light was green. I coasted through the light and another miracle presented itself, the hotel that I was staying at that evening was only 100 yards down the street. I slowly crept into the parking lot of the Black Rock Best Western on 100 King's Highway and used the emergency brake to stop my Jeep. My trip was just beginning and I was stranded. I called AAA to tow the Jeep to a local repair shop and started to conjure numerous scenarios in my mind that would allow me to finish my college tour while waiting for the tow truck. In addition, I also wanted to keep the dinner plans I had for Sunday evening.

Crissy Bowen, a friend from college, works at Fairfield University. I had plans to reconnect with her on Sunday night over dinner and would visit/meet-up with her again during my scheduled visit to Fairfield on Monday morning. I called Crissy and explained my predicament. In typical Crissy fashion she came to the rescue. She waited with me for the wrecker to secure my vehicle. We followed the tow truck to the garage. We kept our dinner plans (two hours after our originally planned time). She picked me up on Monday morning and drove me to Fairfield so that I could make my appointments and then took me to lunch afterwards, eventually driving me back to the garage once the Jeep was repaired. Crissy, Thank You!!!

Leaving Fairfield, I headed to Bowdoin College, Colby College, and Bates College. The visits were fantastic. The weather was majestic, a huge improvement over the constant rain we had been receiving in New Jersey; and I learned a lot about each school. I returned to Pennington on the evening of June 17, 2009. Owen gave me the biggest hug!

Laura finished her school year on June 22, 2009. Owen finished day care on June 26, 2009. For Laura and Owen there summer was officially underway.

On Monday, June 29, 2009, Owen started swim lessons. He took them last year and the lifeguards teaching the lessons were awesome. This year's guards are, well, not great. The planning just isn't there. Owen really doesn't notice the differences but he really isn't learning anything new. We will pursue other options net year.

On Saturday, June 28, 2009, Laura's cousin Val was married and the wedding was well planned. Owen kept calling Val Cinderella. He loves weddings. Having attended two now, my brother's wedding and Val's wedding, he associates them with dancing. Owen loves dancing.

On Tuesday, June 30, 2009, Laura, Owen, and I went to the shore. Yes, Jersey is getting to me. Shore vs. beach. What's the difference? Again, the weather was extremely cooperative and we had a wonderful time. I am looking forward to our next escape to Island Beach State Park.

The Fourth of July was jam packed. Owen earned two blue ribbons at the races held in town. Well, everyone who participated received a blue ribbon. No losers on July 4th! After the races we headed to a family reunion held at my uncle Tom's house in PA. Owen loved seeing his cousins and mastered the Slip-n-slide. Another extremely enjoyable summer adventure.

Now the present.. Owen's third birthday is Saturday. It is hard to believe that he is going to be three. Time sure goes by quickly. Interesting quote - "As parents, the days go by slowly, but the years fly by." On Sunday I head north again for another college/university visitation trip. This time I will visit seven schools. I will have seen over 30 colleges and universities this year once I complete this trip. Not bad!

Until next time. I have booked a rental car for this trip. Pray I don't have any vehicle problems this time.

PENS Hoist the CUP!!!

Sorry for the lack of writing. I have been traveling in New England visiting colleges and universities. I will write about my visits a little later, first, I want to celebrate the PENGUINS WIN!!!

The Greatest Team on Earth...The Pittsburgh Penguins!!!! Pittsburgh is truly title town. Steelers and Penguins in the same year!!! What a game seven!!! If you had taken my blood pressure during the last two minutes, I would have been admitted to the emergency room. After the win, Laura went on-line and bought me a real game jersey with 'GNATPACK' and '44' on it. Owen will also be getting a jersey as well. It will have 'OWEN' on the back with the number '11' for his birthday. I can't wait for it to arrive. I had made a friendly wager with a colleague that he would wear a PENS jersey for a day if the Penguins won. I would wear his WINGS jersey if Detroit won. I will make sure to secure a photo for posterity.

Busy but a very good weekend!

The weekend started off with making sure our international students had dinner for Friday night. Everything worked out; however, the weather was horrible. Rain, rain, rain!!! Saturday went of without a hitch. The bus almost died while driving three students to the Hun School to take the SAT. It did die on the way home when I didn't have any students on board. Even with a misbehaving bus, all our testers tested, moved out of the dorms, and made their flights.

Saturday afternoon was uneventful, I crashed and slept most of the day. Thank you Laura! The Penguins were humiliated by Detroit losing game five, 5-0. Maybe they can pull game six out on Tuesday. If the Red Wings win, I have to wear a Wings jersey to work. Tom, you better wash the jersey before you give it to me.

Sunday, the weather was majestic so the three of us went to the Philadelphia Zoo. What a zoo day!!! Owen loved seeing the polar bear, the tigers, and elephant. He liked the monkeys and the black bear that was playing in the mud.

Around five we went to the residential life staff party. Owen loved the inflatable jumper and played with his friends for almost two and half hours straight. He was a sweat ball the entire time and slept well last night.

Around 4:00 p.m. Lizzy Giffen, who works with me, and her husband Jason welcomed Wyatt Alexander Giffen into the world. Wyatt was 8 lbs. at delivery and was 21 inches long. Lizzy is now officially on maternity leave. Mother and family are well.

Tied Two - Two!!!!

What a game!!! The second period was awesome!!! Laura missed most of the goals but was able to watch the intensive play that occurred during the second period. Fleury was on fire, Crosby and Malkin connected, and Jordan Staal's goal really took the steam out of Detroit. Game five is back at the Joe. If the PENS can win at the Joe, I believe that Lord Stanley's Cup could be a reality. GO PENS!!! I know that Detriot needs a boost with the automotive industry in shambles; however, Pittsburgh wouldn't mind holding two championships at the same time. Oh, by the way, the Mets were swept by the Bucs. Can you believe that???

2-1, Need a Win!!

The PENS play tonight and they really need a win. This is the second year in a row that Pittsburgh has played Detroit in the Stanley Cup Finals. Again the Pens find themselves behind 2-1. I believe that if the Pens can even things up this evening, maybe, just maybe, a cup is attainable. Detroit has a really good team! Game four starts at 8:00 p.m. We will soon know....

Now one may ask, "Why does Scott cheer for the PENS?" Well, living in Pittsburgh for five and a half years and cheering for Mario and Jagr kinda stuck. Laura was a Devils fan and I a Fylers fan. We both received free tickets to numerous games (Thanks Mike), the Igloo was practically in our backyard, and having the privilege to see Mario play solidified our passion. For the record, I support the Eagles(NFC)/Steelers(AFC), Phillies, Penguins, and Sixers.

If the Eagles ever played the Steelers in the Super Bowl, I guess I will have to figure out where I am watching game before I choose sides:)

Cape Cod Bound 2009

Laura and I pulled the trigger. We are headed to Cape Cod this summer for our annual family trip. Normally we go in August but decided to move our trip up a couple weeks this year. We will be in Brewster from July 24th through July 31st. We love the Cape and really get a chance to relax during our trip. Owen has a blast and actually asked us if we were going to the Cape this year. He wanted to know if he could dig on the beach:)
I have now recruited my iPhone into this endeavor.
